Are you kidding me? Arghhh! I enjoyed listening to those on my iPod when I ran. I thought it was a brilliantly schemed marketing research. Track how many times a song(s) were downloaded from a particular show. Then from the most popular shows offer them in Rhino's digital relases.

For example: the Let It Grow was brilliant from 5.14.78, part of the May Taper's Section selections. A few of us grokked it last weekend. I told several of my friends about it. We lamented that the show is only available in an AUD. Wouldn't it be great if it was released in a crisp well balanced SBD? Yes, was our answer.

I guess I gave Rhino too much credit. Or maybe I underestimated them. They can still track hits to a particular selection, yet we don't get the benefit of listening to it. Guess I think in kind ways, not protectionist mentality.

For my part, as well as many here I suspect, we are completionists. Our quest will not be done until we own all of the shows. That snipet of LIG made me want the rest of the show. I still would like a nice SBD of it. So how do I get it? The answer is I can't unless they release it. So start releasing and see if we buy. I bought the Vault 3 that was just released, and they didn't even remaster it. They just packaged and priced it, the work was done 15 years ago. Don't make us wait 15 more years. Half of us will be old geezers, and the other half will have our kids in college, too poor or indifferent to the Dead to even buy it. Release now while you still have a waning market segment.

Hey Wineland, didn't know if the "are you kidding me?" was directed at me, but I am pretty much completely in the dark on all of this...I did download shows (the 'download series' I think?) from the store, but they stopped, and that is all meant by I was pissed off...wished things like that had continued.

Is that what this new Taper's Section was all about? IE, you could download songs again, and then it was recently stopped?

William - It was not directed at you. It was my rant on Rhino. They could not have mismanaged a portfolio any worse than, dare I say it, chucked the entire vault in the dumpster. My bro and I downloaded four of the Live Digital Releases (3.17.68, 4.17.69, 1.18.70, 2.4.70). I thought they sounded great.

The Tapers Section is released every Monday by David Lemieux, one of the Vault Archivists. Each week features tasty cuts from "this week in history". They used to be downloadable in mp3 format, but recently changed to streaming only. Check it out. Some incredible selections:
http://www.dead.net/features/tapers-section

By no means did I intend any ill will towards yourself. I was just p!ssed that yet another outlet was yanked from us. It's their intellectual property, so they can do what they want with it. But if it doesn't burn me up I don't know what does. We are band of pranksters, most all of us accustomed to seeing laws as greyish, not black and white. What's next the bittorrents?

Well then, I guess it will be back the good old days of trading by mail. No skin off my back. I loved the days of anticipating a new show to appear in my mail box. In fact, I got home last night to find four incredible SBD's from 74 sent by Arbuthnot. Tell me that didn't make my day. BTW, thanks Arb!!!

As for Rhino, "It's a shame those boys couldn't be more copasetic."

"What's next the bittorrents?"

i was kinda wondering about the BT sites - could Rhino actually do anything to/about them???? i'm not totally in understanding how that whole thing works (legally/intellectual prop/ etc), even though i do download from them

that would REALLY suck!!!!

I suppose the Dead and Rhino could stop the bittorrents. Every band has a policy that needs to be followed. Administrators from the bittorrents regulate them. Even the users will let one another know that a show can't be uploaded.

But imagine the backlash from the fans. We talked boycot before when the SBDs were taken from the Archive. Many stuck to it. To be honest, I have only bought the latest Vault 3 release, although I have gone to see their tours.

Times change and we will too. The Archive family, not to mention our brothers and sisters over at DeadHook, must surely have 99% of what is available out there. As the big man assured us "We will get by / We will survive"

BTW: I just love to listen to the audience react to Touch of Grey in the coma comeback show:

For example, here's Ratdogs policy:

Maybe it is my Scottish blood, but I can pretty damned stubborn. There are many avenues to get quality shows. I would rather have a good feeling about Rhino than an us against them mentality.

In all seriousness, when my hops bloom in the next couple weeks, I'll use them to make Grok IPA. Actually, Grokster IPA sounds a little better.

But, Rob's got a great idea--we can have "Loser of the day" and "Sadfucker of the Week" as well...

I was thinking I would get the nod for Loser since if you haven't noticed over at DH (we can talk about over there over here, right? Is anyone but huntr watching?) I joined FIRST so I am the real loser that deserted this ship first. [recall when Ian and I both said we were pissed off and not going to play anymore? Way back in Nov, 06?
